Bruce Price, president of Marathon Press, has announced that Marathon is now affiliated with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) through its Chain of Custody Certification. FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world's forests. With offices in more than 46 countries, it provides standards setting, trademark assurance, and accreditation services for companies and organizations interested in responsible forestry.
Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations. According to Price, "Marathon sought out FSC Certification to assure that papers we purchase are manufactured from logs harvested from sustainable, well-managed forests. Doing so requires that we maintain the 'Chain of Custody' (CoC) of the original log and not mix any other non-certified material with the print job involved. It is also our responsibility to document each step of the manufacturing process from paper purchase to client sales."
This is just another step in Marathon's ongoing effort to improve its carbon footprint. In addition, Marathon's gang runs ensure that each press sheet is used more efficiently by grouping jobs together and therefore producing less waste. Other ways in which Marathon works to better the environment are through the use of eco-friendly vegetable oil-based inks, water-based coatings and a recycling program in which Marathon yearly donates more than 900,000 pounds of paper and 16,000 pounds of aluminum press plates to be recycled.
